Isle of Man Youth Tour, 28 to 30 April 2017
Friday, Day 1, Prologue, Douglas Promenade.
The first stage was a short 1.3 km individual time trial up and down the promenade in Douglas in front of big crowds. I came 30th out of 54 riders; not a great start but this is not my strongest event.
Saturday, Day 2, Flat 12 lap crit, Jurby.
The weather was dry but very windy, with a tail wind on the finish straight. The race started fast and I was in the main/lead bunch. About a third of the way through the race a crash happened right in front of me and I had to slow down to avoid a rider on the floor and I couldn’t close the gap to the peleton. I was disappointed to lose 4 minutes on the leaders, I was 21st in the stage and was now 24th overall. Disappointing but moving in the right direction.
Sunday, Day 3, Hilly stage 9 laps, Port Soderick.
The weather was again very windy with the Junior race being shortened to two hours due to the high winds on the exposed coast road. Our course was a bit more sheltered but still very hilly. The race split on the first time up the hill, with a solo rider in the lead, followed by a group of three, followed by a larger group of about eight riders, which I was in. Then a bigger group behind. A couple of riders were dropped from our group as the repeated efforts up the hill took their toll, but the groups largely stayed the same. On the final lap a couple of riders attacked and were able to get away. I came 10th on the stage missing out on the sprint. This result moved me up to 12th in the final classification which I was pretty happy with.
